Frequently asked questions¶

Does Pymote play music on my iPhone?¶

No. Pymote is a remote control. Music plays on your Mopidy server and comes out of the DAC or amplifier connected to it. Your iPhone or iPad only tells the server what to play, so it can be locked, in another room or switched off and the music keeps going.

What do I need?¶

A Mopidy server on your home network, with its HTTP frontend enabled (it is by default, on port 6680). Pymote is tested with Mopidy 4. Useful extensions:

mopidy-goodies is optional but highly recommended. Without it Pymote still browses, searches and controls playback; the extra features are simply hidden.

Pymote can't connect to my server¶

Use Mopidy's HTTP port, 6680 — not the MPD port (6600).
Mopidy must listen on the network, not only on the server itself. In mopidy.conf:

Pymote needs Local Network permission. If you declined it, turn it on in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network → Pymote.
Your iPhone and the server must be on the same network (or connected through a VPN).

TIDAL is signed in on your Mopidy server (Mopidy-Tidal), not in the app. If the server has no TIDAL session, the TIDAL tab shows a Sign In to TIDAL button: open the link, sign in and approve. Pymote detects the new session within a few seconds and loads your collection.

What does "Bit-perfect" mean in Now Playing?¶

With mopidy-goodies installed, Now Playing shows the source format, the sample rate your DAC is actually receiving and, when the whole output chain passes the audio untouched (direct hardware output, no resampling, no software volume), a Bit-perfect badge. DSD files are converted to PCM by Mopidy's audio engine, so they show as DSD → PCM and are never marked bit-perfect.

Where is the volume slider?¶

If your server outputs bit-perfect audio with no software mixer (mixer = none), there is no volume to control on the server — you set the volume on your DAC or amplifier. Pymote hides the slider in that case. With a mixer configured, the slider appears in Now Playing.

Why don't I see credits, reviews or artist bios?¶

They come from mopidy-goodies. For TIDAL albums they come from TIDAL. For your own files they come from your tags (for example credits written by MusicBrainz Picard) and, when your album can be matched to TIDAL by barcode or ISRC, from TIDAL too. Albums that can't be matched simply don't show those sections.

I added new albums to the server. How do I see them?¶

With mopidy-goodies: Settings → Update Library rescans only new or changed files. Rescan Everything re-reads the whole library. Without it, run mopidy local scan on the server.

Can I try Pymote without a server?¶

Yes. On the connection screen tap Try Demo Mode. It loads a fictional library with simulated playback. To leave demo mode, enter your server's address in Settings.

What permissions does the app need?¶

Local network — to reach your Mopidy server.

Nothing else. No camera, microphone, photos, location, contacts, calendar, Health or notifications.

Which devices does Pymote run on?¶

iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later.
